Congratulations! I am so excited you are in Leadership Workshop and ready to have a positive impact on Keaau Middle School. The talents and skills you’ll develop as a student leader are essential to making this school inviting and fun for the entire student body. Please read the following syllabus and expectations carefully so you know what is asked of you and how to be successful in this class.
Course Goals
Course Description
Leadership class is focused on preparing students for leadership opportunities in high school, the future work environment, and life. It offers the student the opportunity to develop speaking and writing skills; to improve in courtesy, confidence, poise, and appearance to work with peers of diverse backgrounds and attitudes, to share responsibilities with adults, to consider and work with problems of income and expenditures; planning and executing student activities for up to 600+ students and faculty. Here’s a list of what we will be learning in this class: Styles of Leadership, Goal Setting, Organization, Project Planning, Meeting Skills, Citizenship, Ethics, Group
Process/Group Dynamics, Team Building, Conflict Resolution/Conflict Management, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Communication, Community Service, Activity Evaluation.
Teamwork
Everyone will work in a Team and/or individually to accomplish the assigned tasks. Team Leaders will be rotated amongst the group so that all get to a chance to see both roles played out. Everyone in Leadership helps when there is need regardless of the circumstances – we’re only as strong as our weakest link! Everyone will push publicity for your activity.
Organization
We will learn and use 4 major Activity Planning Tools to help us plan-prep-run student
activities throughout the school year. Project Proposals (presentations) share your research and initial ideas. Activity Planning Guides help you to organize every aspect of your team’s activity and cover all the bases for materials to manpower. Micro Plans will help with activity setup, running and breakdown. Good planning, early planning is the key to success!
Citizenship
You will represent yourself as a member of the Leadership class, a member of Keaau Middle School, no matter where you are to best of your abilities. Our job is to help our fellow students without looking for any compensation (intrinsic rewards). To know that we did our job – and did it right – is the ultimate goal.
